Final word on the Obama New Yorker Cover

July 19, 2008

The two best commentaries on the New Yorker Obama cover kerfuffle I came across this week came from comedians, appropriately enough. Baratunde Thurston and Jordan Carlos led a discussion on the Brian Lehrer show, and Jon Stewart nailed cable news for propagating rumors and innuendo as part of their daily public service. (Baratunde has a nuanced blog post on the cover issue that concludes, “The fact that many in the country have been talking about this cover is ultimately a good thing (even if you think the cover itself was bad) because it brings into the light the shady theories and lets us show them for the foolishness they are.”)
