Larry Handlin has a nice take on Emil Jones, Obama’s Springfield mentor and Nate Silver’s preferred candidate to assume the open Senate seat.
Jones is a crusty, old-time pork barrel politician who also happens to be fairly liberal on social issues so most liberals look the other way because with all of the outrages in Illinois politics, he’s a rather benign figure….Jones sees politics as a way to help his community. It’s just that he sees his community as primarily friends and relatives. There’s nothing new there and I think it’s fair to say he has often been a target of extra criticism because he’s kinda different than previous Lege leaders in one important way. But that doesn’t makes him innocent or somehow above the dirty work of politics in Illinois.
